Spring!
September 20, 2009

Hi guys! So sorry about the sporadic posts…

I’m getting there, I promise.

Life has been busy for us in this household! As I mentioned some while back I have 3 kids, all at school. They are about to launch into their school production soon, so I have had low budget costumes, gumboots, dances, youtube songs and haka’s going around and around my living room, as they absorb themselves in it all.

It’s extremely entertaining, but that said, I will be happy when it’s all over for them!

The school holidays are nearly upon us, so I am going to be a different kind of busy.

I usually take this opportunity to photograph my OWN children 9 when they are willing) as I get a bit more access to the when they are not ‘jetlagged’ from school.

I actually secretly look forward to the holidays… No morning routine to adhere to!

Here are some shots from the last holidays we had… a bit of a laugh.

Summer Sun

How beautiful is the day today!

I woke up, and realized it was jandal weather, and that is an exciting discovery in my world!

In Christchurch we have these beautiful botanical gardens, which according to the guy who drives the tram around the city, are the second biggest inner city gardens ( next to Central Park, New York) in the world. How cool is that?!

So, there seems to be an unspoken rule that once a year, in spring time, every family in Christchurch heads down to the gardens and takes photos of their kids in the daffodils.

I can see the appeal, it’s really beautiful down there, almost enchanted…

But my kids – bless them- suffer from hayfever.  If I tried to get them to lay down in the daffodils, I would have sneezy, itchy kids, and red eye of a different kind in the photographs.

Never the less, I will take them down to play, because they should be part of the unspoken rule, that goes hand in hand with living in Christchurch in springtime.

– And I can always photograph them at the beach….. 😉

Where did your parents take you when you were young, for yearly family photographs? Our taste may differ from that of our parents, or grandparents, but the importance of the subject matter still remains the same. Perhaps I’ll see you in the daffodils!

Happy spring and have a fabulous weekend!

Good Morning Baby
September 8, 2009

I had a ball of a time this morning with this gorgeous wee guy. Cooper is 11 weeks old.

(His Mum is a hunny too 🙂 )

It’s families like these that make what I do such a joy.

He just chilled, and did his thing, then he had a sleep, we had a coffee, he woke up, and we got a few more!

It is a privilege to be invited into someone’s home, and Marina and baby Cooper made me feel very welcome.

Thanks guys! Can’t wait till next time 🙂

NZIPP Awards
September 3, 2009

Playing UpWell, I’ll start this blog by having a tiny brag :)

I entered the NZIPP Iris Awards for the first time this year, and I was awarded a bronze!

I was really chuffed, as it had taken a lot of determination and hard work.

Next year I think I will submit a few more… aim for photographer of the year aye!

One of my biggest loves in this ‘job’ is photographing kids.

As I have said many a time, they have beauty in their randomness.  I know some people want a photo of their child in it’s Sunday best, sitting still, looking straight at the camera, and thats cool. I can help you with that.

What I can also do, is capture the moments that happen behind the scenes.  This is where it gets fun… and funny.

Not all kids WANT to look straight at a camera. Sometimes they would rather run away, whilst losing the dress, yelling at you, and throwing their shiney shoes away.

I know. I have 3.

And you just have to go with it and grab those awesome shots. They embody a part of the child that is truly, and honestly them.

Then, if you let them feel like they are still in control…. they sit down, look at me… and smile.
